  • Pins and needles in your thumb and first two fingers by the end of a shift

Why It Happens

Neck pain is a symptom. Something causes it.

Your neck holds up the weight of your head all day, and it does that with small joints and deep muscles built for endurance, not for one fixed position. Let your head drift forward of your shoulders and the load on those joints climbs. The deep muscles in front give up, the upper traps and the muscle along your shoulder blade take over, and the small joints in back get compressed and stiff. If a disc is part of it, the nerve root leaving that level gets crowded. That is when the pain stops staying in your neck and runs into the shoulder blade, the arm, or the fingers.

Rest calms all of that down, then the first long day brings it back, because nothing about the cause changed. The stiff segments are still stiff. The deep muscles are still off. The muscles covering for them are still carrying more than their share. An evaluation that looks for the cause tests your motion level by level, checks the nerves for irritation, screens your strength side to side, and looks at how you hold your head under real load. Then you are fixing something specific instead of chasing the ache around.

The Honest Truth

A stiff neck doesn’t stay just a stiff neck.

If you keep waiting

  • The range you stop using becomes your new normal, and you stop noticing
  • Headaches start riding along with it, and now two things need fixing
  • Arm symptoms show up: tingling, a weak grip, things you drop for no reason

If you start this week

  • You find out on day one whether a joint, a disc or a nerve is driving it
  • Hands-on work eases the guarding before you leave the building
  • You get a plan with an endpoint, and the phase you’re in written down

Nobody regrets starting too early.

How We Fix It

The same four phases. Built for your neck.

Every plan has an endpoint. Here’s what the four phases look like for neck pain.

Weeks 1–2

Pain

Calm the pain down.

Joint mobilization, soft tissue work and functional dry needling settle the irritated segment and the muscles clamped around it, starting visit one.

Weeks 2–6

Prime

Get your motion back.

Rotation and extension come back level by level, and nerve glides give an irritated nerve room to move if your arm is involved.

Weeks 6–10

Perform

Make it strong enough to trust.

The deep neck muscles and the muscles around your shoulder blades get strong enough to hold your head up through a full workday.

Weeks 10+

Prevent

Return better than before.

Your workstation, your sleep setup and a two-minute reset get built into the day, so the stiffness has nowhere to rebuild. That’s the endpoint, not just another appointment.

Questions, Answered

What people ask before booking for neck pain.

Usually not, and it’s rarely the first step. An MRI shows structure, not function, so it can’t tell us which level has stopped moving or which muscle is holding the guard. It also finds disc bulges and wear and tear in people with no pain at all. A hands-on evaluation tests the neck level by level and checks the nerves, which is what actually points at the driver. We screen for the findings that need a physician, and if imaging becomes necessary, we help you get it.

Yes, when it’s the right movement at the right dose. Hurt doesn’t always mean harm, and a neck that gets protected completely just gets stiffer and weaker. What matters is direction and load: some positions calm an irritated nerve down, others wind it up, and the evaluation sorts out which is which for you. You do the work one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist, so it gets adjusted while you’re in the room, not at your next visit.

We won’t guess at a number before we’ve looked at your neck, and you shouldn’t trust anyone who does. What you get after the evaluation is a plan with an endpoint: four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform, Prevent, each with a job and a way to know you’ve earned the next one. You’ll always know which phase you’re in and what’s left. No open-ended string of appointments, and no surprises about cost partway through.

No referral needed. Louisiana is a direct access state, so you can be evaluated by a licensed physical therapist without going through a physician first. We run a benefits check before your first visit, so you know your coverage in advance, and a Good Faith Estimate is available if you’re paying out of pocket. We accept Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, TRICARE, TriWest and Peoples Health, plus workers’ compensation and auto accident claims.

It’s the same neck, with a nerve involved. When a nerve root leaving your neck gets crowded, the symptoms show up down the path it travels: the shoulder blade, the outside of the arm, specific fingers. Which fingers tells us which level. That changes the plan, because an irritated nerve needs unloading and gentle gliding before it will tolerate strengthening. It also raises the stakes on waiting, so bring it up at the evaluation. Real weakness gets screened the same day.
